Can PVC Reduce the Economic Cost of Living?

Older GenZ shoppers may just now be getting into the market for home furnishings, but some furniture retailers are already preparing for the potential buying onslaught from this key demographic group as they increase their buying power over the next several years.

According to Knit Research, Gen Z, which includes those born between 1995 and 2012, accounts for about 40 percent of the world’s consumers and influences $600 billion in spending. Not all of that spending is related to furnishings, of course, but this group is already linked to more than 15 percent  of furniture purchases.

This fact shows us that GenZ is also concerned about home furnishing. They usually choose to create smart furniture which is comfortable for working. Technology is an integral part of their lives, so incorporating elements such as smart homes satisfies their need for the modern interior.

GenZ are also more conscious than ever, favoring minimalistic , eco-friendly and sustainable design. They often opt for organic materials such as bamboo, cork, and linen in their decorating schemes. This is reflected through their interest in upcycling, recycling and repurposing items, and their preference for items that have a natural and timeless look.

Unfortunately, GenZ are financially precarious, worried, and don’t think they’ll ever be able to own a home. McKinsey surveyed 1,763 Americans ages 18 to 24 for their American Opportunity Survey (AOS), which asked 25,062 American adults about their finances and outlooks between March 15 and April 18 in 2022.

Meanwhile in Indonesia, according to a prediction made by Rumah123, only 5 percent of millennials in Jakarta will be able to buy their own homes due to the huge disparity between rising property prices and the average income. So, it is almost impossible for Genz to build modern furniture if they cannot buy a house.

The small number of millennials in Jakarta who can afford a house might tighten their outcome. So, building modern or eco-friendly furniture is not easy for them. Imagine that Genz might spend a lot of money to create furniture. The Ingredients of modern or eco-friendly furniture like plywood and blockboard are too expensive for GenZ. So, there’s alternative products that can substitute the material. The products are PVC.
PVC or has the scientific name polyvinyl chloride, is a good material used in everyday life. Not only for fashion products, PVC is also often used for materials such as ceilings, pipes to doors in the bathroom of the house. These advantages make PVC one of the most frequently used commodities after polypropylene and polyethylene.

But, plastic makes up about 11 million tonnes out of 66 million tonnes of packaging waste, of which PVC accounts for 0.7 million tonnes. So, The Packaging and Packaging Wastes Directive (94/62/EC) requires that by no later than 2001, between 50 and 65 per cent (by weight) of packaging must be recovered. Within this general target, between 25 and 45 per cent will be recycled, with a minimum of 15 per cent for each packaging material. The implications for PVC packaging wastes are the same as for other plastic packaging wastes.

Instead of having plastic waste, PVC is better used for other needs such as household or furniture. There are many ways to create simple furniture in your house with PVC.

Various reasons cause many people to use PVC for their homes. First, because it has high durability. Even though the price is cheap and tends to be light, PVC is known as a material that is resistant to termite attack and is also waterproof. This is why many people make it a bathroom door material.

Second, because PVC is easy to carry and easy to install, including for tall or multi-storey buildings. Maintenance is also not difficult because it is enough to clean it periodically using a mixture of cold water and detergent.

So to maintain every advantage possessed by PVC, it is fitting that intensive maintenance is carried out. If you want to make the product last longer, it is appropriate to clean the product with a mixture of soap and water. If it has been cleaned with soap, then the next step is to clean it with a cloth.

In addition, you can also avoid exposure to direct sunlight. Given that PVC can be susceptible to damage if exposed to sunlight. Meanwhile, if the PVC product gets wet, the way that can be done is to wipe the wet surface using a dry cloth.

So for household needs, PVC material can be relied upon to produce a variety of antique furniture and decorations at an affordable economic price. Not only that, if you want to create eco-friendly furniture, you can choose some ingredients like calcium zinc stabilizer, barium zinc stabilizer, tin stabilizer, and calcium stearate.
