Men and women can produce sebum from within their bodies. An article titled Comparative Study of Male and Female Sebum Production published in The Egyptian Journal of Hospital Medicine explains that sebum is composed primarily of glycerides, free fatty acids, wax esters, and squalene.

Glycerides are more commonly known as "fats" and are molecules made up of two or three free fatty acids connected by a glycerol backbone. Free fatty acids are the building blocks of glycerides and other molecules.

Research has shown that people with high sebum levels tend to produce sebum with a different composition than those with normal sebum levels. People with acne tend to have decreased levels of free fatty acids but increased levels of glycerides and squalene.
